Harriet Schulman: A Life of Drawing
Exhibit and Sale
Exhibit and Sale
Harriet Zena Schulman was born and raised in the Bronx, New York. Her father was an artist and taught her to draw and paint at an early age. Harriet attended art school through high school and college, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art. Harriet met her husband, Milton, on a hike in the Catskill Mountains that neither of them wanted to be on. Instead of hiking, they spent the day talking about art, music and literature. Milton was a journalist and a musician. They enjoyed visiting art museums and jazz clubs in Manhattan. It was in those smoky, dark venues that Harriet would pull out her notepad and charcoal to sketch the performing musicians. Neighbors in their apartment building and people in her colorful borough also became subjects in her sketches.
Ready to make a change and leave New York City, Harriet and Milton moved to Seattle in the mid 1980’s. In Seattle, Harriet visited libraries and waiting rooms in search of subjects to sketch. She also enjoyed visiting the zoo where she developed an affinity for sketching animals. Harriet additionally loved volunteering at the Frye Art Museum. Harriet and Milton became residents of Providence Mount St. Vincent in 2016. After Milton’s passing, Harriet continued to draw and paint and especially found great joy in participating in the Intergenerational programs at The Mount.
Harriet generously donated the artwork in this virtual sale to the Providence Mount St. Vincent Foundation. All proceeds from the sale will support Art at The Mount, a program she regularly participated in while a resident. Taught by Bridget Daly, Art at The Mount includes instruction in various art media and concepts for all residents and patients regardless of ability or prior experience. An additional and unique program within Art at The Mount brings together Mount residents and preschoolers from the on-site intergenerational learning center. Together they explore the fundamentals of art while building lasting friendships with each other.
